The Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS) is an independent, not-for-profit association, dedicated to supporting, educating, and promoting the Microsoft SQL Server community. The I380 PASS Chapter is newly formed to support SQL Server users in the cities of Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. We plan to meet the second Tuesday of every month, and we're working hard to develop a vibrant and interactive SQL community for Eastern Iowa.
Meetings are always FREE and food is provided, typically pizza. Please register to help us know how much food to bring, but feel free to come even if you decide at the last minute and cannot register ahead of time. Details about the meeting can be found below.
If you have any questions, please contact Michelle Ufford (michelle@sqlfool.com), Chris Leonard (chris@databaseguy.com), or Ed Leighton-Dick (ed.leightondick@gmail.com). |

| Topic: |
Lost in translation: What really happens when you run that query?
Ever wonder what happens after a request leaves your application and heads to the database server and before the results come back? This chalk talk will walk you through the basics performed by a database server to service a request. Along the way, we'll also touch on why your DBA says some of those frustrating and inscrutable things that sometimes contribute to a love/hate relationship between developers and DBAs. Topics we will touch on include query optimization and compilation, plan caching and reuse, and why such things should matter to you.

Chris Leonard
Chris Leonard has been working with programming since the 1980s. Along the way, he has worked as an application developer, a system DBA, and a database developer, but his work has always been database-centric. As a consultant (databaseguy.com), Chris has presented hundreds of training classes, contributed to many practice certification exams for Transcender, Meausure Up, Brain Bench, and Microsoft, and worked on an occasional book or two. He holds several Microsoft certifications, and was named a official subject matter expert in SQL Server 2005 and 2008 by Microsoft Learning, which allowed him to work on many aspects of Microsoft's certification products for SQL Server.
Chris's full-time job is that of database team lead at GoDaddy.com, the world's largest domain name registrar and paid hosting provider. In that position, Chris leads a three-person team that is responsible for the data tier used by all of Go Daddy's core registrar systems.
A perpetual insomniac, Chris probably wrote his presentation sometime between midnight and 3am. When he's not busy being a database guy, he is usually doing something with his wonderful wife and the four kids they've been blessed with. He first presented this topic at Iowa Code Camp 4, and believes he was invited to speak there as payback for the good-natured ribbing that the CRINETA folks put up at our inaugural SQL Saturday event.

| East Iowa SQL Saturday - Call for Speakers! - Wednesday, June 10, 2009The Call for Speakers is now open for the East Iowa SQL Saturday! This is our first time hosting a SQL Saturday, and there’s a lot of excitement and interest from our local SQL Server folks. There’s some interest from local speakers, but we’ll probably also need to pull in speakers from outside of Cedar Rapids and Iowa City to support the number of tracks and attendees we plan to have.
The event will be held on October 17th, 2009 at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Special thanks to Russ Allen for his help with securing a location for us!
You can find out a little more information and submit sessions at our SQL Saturday website.
Updated to change the date to October 17th, 2009. read more ...
